Firms submitted expressions of interest in May

Abu Dhabi-based Emirates Water & Electricity Company (Ewec) has issued the request for qualifications for the new Al-Ajban solar photovoltaic (PV) independent power project.

Ewec received expressions of interest for the contract on 27 May.

To be located in Abu Dhabi’s Al-Ajban area, the planned solar IPP will have a capacity of 1,500MW.

Ewec has yet to finalise whether the scheme will integrate a battery energy storage system.

Clean energy push

In March, a senior Abu Dhabi government official announced a plan to expand the UAE capital’s total solar power generation capacity to 20GW by 2030, up from the current 1.3GW.

If implemented, this plan will mean clean energy sources, including nuclear energy, will account for more than half of Abu Dhabi's total electricity production capacity by the end of the decade.
