Abu Dhabi Ship Building wins navy contract

26 February 2009
Abu Dhabi Ship Building (ADSB) has agreed a AED930m ($253m) deal to build 12 new ships and refit a further 12 vessels for the UAE's navy.

Staff Major-General Ahmed Al Tenaiji, commander of the UAE Naval Forces, says the new vessels will be fast fighting boats and will be delivered over four years.

The first is scheduled to arrive in mid 2010, with one vessel to be delivered every three months after that.

The deal was agreed at the International Defence Exhibition & Conference (Idex) in Abu Dhabi in late February.

The state-owned Mubadala Development Company is ADSB's main shareholder. Mubadala recently signed an agreement to establish a military aircraft maintenance facility, in a joint venture with the US' Sikorsky Aerospace Services, also at Idex (MEED 24:2:09).
