Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority (Adwea) will start producing more than 3,500MW of electricity and 230 million gallons a day (g/d) a day of water at two new independent water and power projects (IWPPs) by mid-2011, a senior executive tells MEED.

The Shuweihat S2 and Fujairah F2 IWPPs will be commissioned by the middle of 2011, says Saif al-Nuaimi, director of privatisation at Adwea.

The authority will start commercial operations at the Fujairah F2 plant by the end of 2010, Al-Nuaimi says. The plant will produce 2,000MW of power and 130 million g/d of water

The UK’s International Power and Japan’s Marubeni are building the plant and will operate it when it starts producing electricity and water. The facility is located at Qidfa in Fujairah.

The $2.6bn Shuweihat S2 facility will come online by mid-2011, Al-Nuaimi says.

The plant is being developed by France’s GDF Suez and Marubeni. When complete, it will have a capacity of 1,500MW of power and 10 million g/d of water.
