Abu Qir rail contract let

The contract to build a marine railway at Abu Qir harbour, in Alexandria, has been awarded to American International Contractors, one of four US companies to submit bids for the scheme in mid 2001. The price for the two-year contract is $11.5 million. The client is the US Army Corps of Engineers. The other bidders were ABB SUSA, Contrack Internationaland Morganti (MEED 26:10:01).

The design-build contract includes harbour dredging, site backfilling and marine construction. The railway will be used to haul Egyptian navy vessels into onshore workbays for maintenance, overhaul and repairs.
