Aden governor survives attack

Former governor killed by IS attack on 6 December

Aden’s governor Aidarous al-Zubaidi, along with other Yemeni government officials, survived an assassination attack launched on 5 January against their convoy near the town of Enma.

Al-Zubaidi’s predecessor, Jaafar Mohammed Saad, was killed on 6 December in an attack claimed by the Islamic State (IS).

On 4 January, Al-Zubaidi has declared a nighttime curfew in the city in a bid to control the advance of both Al-Qaeda and IS militant groups in the port city.

The curfew was to be in place from 8:00pm to 5:00am for an unspecified period of time.

An Associated Press report on 4 January, however, alluded to the difficulty of enforcing the curfew “since the Yemeni forces… are stretched thin…”

Cases of assassination in Yemen have been increasing as the conflict deepens and the Saudi-led military intervention enters its 10th month.
