Biography: Ahmed Mubarak al-Mazrouei became chairman of state utility Adwea in December 2010.

He was previously chairman and CEO of Health Authority Abu Dhabi, the body responsible for regulating the emirate’s healthcare sector. Al-Mazrouei took over from Sheikh Diab bin Zayed al-Nahyan as head of Adwea. Sheikh Diab played a central role in the development of private power and water projects in Abu Dhabi.

The most recent is the Shuweihat 3 project, which is expected in reach financial close in 2011. It remains to be seen if Al-Mazrouei, a trained physician, will continue the same privatisation strategies as Sheikh Diab. Al-Mazrouei is also deputy secretary-general of Abu Dhabi’s Executive Council, the emirate’s main decision-making body.

In October 2009, he was appointed as chairman of the board of the Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation, the body regulating the UAE’s nuclear power programme.
