Aker targets construction contracts in Saudi Arabia

12 March 2009
Saudi Arabia’s Arabian Consulting Engineering Centre (Acec) has signed an engineering services partnership deal with Norway's Aker Solutions in an effort to target engineering, procurement and construction projects in the kingdom.

Under the deal, Aker Solutions will provide managerial and technical support to expand Acec's engineering services business, which employs 160 staff and is licensed to compete for contracts tendered by state-run oil giant Saudi Aramco.

In 2008 Aramco drew up a shortlist of 27 local and international engineering and construction contractors to compete exclusively for billions of dollars worth of energy projects over the next five years (MEED 2:5:08).

It included the joint venture of Acec and Aker Solutions.

Aramco submitted the list of general engineering services (GES) contractors to the Petroleum & Mineral Resources Ministry for approval.

The decision will then need to be endorsed by the country's Supreme Petroleum Council.

Aramco has created lists of preferred suppliers in the past, but has widened the remit of work for which contractors on the list can bid. It has included project management consultancy (PMC) work for the first time, in addition to general engineering and construction services.
