Al-Meraikhi signs up for uni

The local Al-Meraikhi General Contractinghas received a letter of intent for the estimated AED 200 million ($54 million) contract for the phase 1 expansion of the Abu Dhabi University campus at Khalifa City. Work is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2006 (MEED 26:8:05). The three-phase project calls for the construction of two new colleges, auditoriums, laboratories and leisure facilities covering about 370,000 square metres. The first phase will cater for 5,000 students.

Seven other local contractors bid for the contract including Al-Galfy Contracting, Al-Farah Contracting & General Transport Company, Nael & Bin Harmal, Al-Hamed Development & Construction and Commodore Contracting Company.

The local Arkonsultis the design and supervision consultant. The local office of KEO International Consultantsis the masterplan consultant. The UK's Mace Internationalis the project manager. Abu Dhabi University is the client.

Contractors were also due to submit prequalification applications by 19 October for the $300 million-400 million UAE University campus project being promoted by the local Mubadala Development Company. Australia's Cox Groupis the design consultant and Bovis Lend Lease, also Australian, is providing project management services for the design and procurement phases (MEED 30:9:05).
