Algerian prime minister removed from post

22 July 2003
Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika on 5 May announced the replacement of Prime Minister Ali Benflis with Ahmed Ouyahia, conditional on parliamentary approval. The move follows weeks of reports about differences between Benflis and Bouteflika over the pace of political and economic reform, with the president the more cautious. In March, Benflis, Secretary-General of the ruling Front de Liberation Nationale (FLN) party, blocked an attempt by Bouteflika to win an early FLN endorsement of his presidential candidature ahead of elections set for next 2004. Benflis was formerly a close ally of the president (MEED 8:9:00). Ouyahia served as prime minister from the end of 1995 to 1998.
