Algiers seeks consultant to design Oran metro

Algeria is investing $30bn by 2014 to develop its transport infrastructure

Algeria’s Enterprise Metro d’Alger (EMA) is inviting engineering consultants to submit bids by 9 January 2011 for the consultancy contract to design the first line of the Oran metro.

The scope of the contract covers the design of the railway infrastructure and the integral systems for the first line. EMA is aiming for the first line to be operational by 2014.

Oran, on Algeria’s northwest coast, is the second largest city in Algeria.

Oran has a tramway currently under construction. The tramway will be 18.7 kilometres and have 32 stations when it is complete. Construction of the tramway began in December 2008 and it is being built by a consortium that comprises France’s Alstom and Spain’s Isolux Corsan group. Alstom is also supplying 30 Citadis trams, signalling and the telecommunication system for the line. Isolux will supply the civil engineering, track laying and overhead lines.

Algeria is investing heavily in its rail infrastructure and has a budget of $30bn to spend on transport development between 2010 and 2014.

In July, EMA invited firms to submit bids for the contract to design and manage the construction of a new tram line at Mostaganem in the northwest of Algeria by 3 August (MEED 1:7:10).

EMA says the first line will be 12 kilometres in length and will run from the resort town of Sablettes to the university of Kharouba and then pass through Mostaganem before running onto the town of De Tijd.
