Almabani to build Sabic centre

01 February 2002

Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (Sabic) has awarded a SR 115 million ($30.7 million) contract to the local Almabani General Contractors Company for the construction of a new technology centre at Jubail. Six contractors submitted bids in June for the 500,000-square-metre complex. As part of a research and development (R&D) expansion programme, Sabic has already built research centres in Riyadh and Houston (MEED 13:7:01).

The new two-storey facility will house administrative and laboratory units, and staff facilities such as a clinic, cafeteria, library and several prayer rooms. Research at the centre will focus on materials engineering and corrosion control, petrochemicals equipment testing, industrial hygiene and metals technology.

Sabic staff are scheduled to move into the new centre at the end of 2003. At a later date, the complex will be expanded to include a catalyst pilot plant for specialised research. The consultant on the project is the local Dar al-Riyadh Consultants.
