Biography: Andrew Newbery is the managing partner of Herbert Smith’s Abu Dhabi office. Newbery previously worked at Norton Rose in London until his move to Herbert Smith in 2006. Since 1995, a large portion of his work has been in the Middle East.
He has given legal advice on the financing of projects, including mining and upstream oil and gas. Newbery recently advised Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation and South Korea’s Kepco on the Shuweihat S3 IPP in Abu Dhabi.
He has advised the successful bidders or their lenders on 40 per cent of the Abu Dhabi IPPs over the past 12 years. He also advised the US’ Citigroup on the structuring of the $800m Salik toll road, which reached financial close earlier in 2011. Newbery qualified as an English lawyer while at Norton Rose in 1994 and became a partner there in 2001. He is also qualified as a lawyer in New York.
