Saudi Electricity Company to expand combined-cycle power plant

A team of the local Arabian Bemco Contracting Company and South Korea’s Hyundai Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction has won a contract to expand the Al-Qurayyah combined-cycle power plant.

The group emerged as the low bidder when the client, Saudi Electricity Company, opened the commercial bids for the scheme on 13 June. The team bid $1.85bn for the scheme (MEED 19:6:09).

Bemco and Doosan will convert the Al-Qurayyah simple-cycle power plant into a combined-cycle plant by adding five steam turbines to the facility, with total capacity of 1,000MW a year. This will bring total capacity of the plant to nearly 3,000MW a year by 2011.

Bemco won the SR2.1bn ($560m) contract for the construction of the simple-cycle plant in June 2007.
