Aramco starts production at Nuayyim oil field

21 May 2009
Saudi Aramco has started production at its 100,000 barrel-a-day (b/d) Nuayyim oil field south of Riyadh, about six months after its original deadline.

The oil field, discovered in April 1990, should produce up to 100,000 b/d of Arabian Super Light crude at its peak.

A source at Aramco says the field started first production in the third week of May, but he declined to give details of how much crude is currently being pumped.

The oil giant originally expected to start production in December 2008, but the field suffered a delay due to labour shortages (MEED 20:6:08).

Nuayyim, southwest of the giant Ghawar field, has 250 million barrels of reserves, according to analysts (MEED 23:6:06).

The field started production in early 1997, but Aramco subsequently mothballed the facilities.
