Athena, which was the low bidder for the project at about AED 185 million ($50 million), beat off competition from four other groups (MEED 1:10:04). The contract calls for the construction a 400-metre quay and two new deepwater berths. The project, which is scheduled for completion by 2006, is intended to double Khor Fakkan's existing handling capacity from 1.8 million 20-foot equivalent units a year. Halcrowof the UK completed detailed design studies for the scheme. Sharjah Ports & Customs Authority is the client.
