Awards kick start Emirates grid interconnection

The Ministry of Electricity & Water (MEW) issued letters of award in mid-March to seven local and international contractors for the main packages on the estimated AED 800 million ($218 million) Emirates National Grid (ENG) project. The awards came six months after 12 companies submitted bids for the various packages on the project, which will result in the interconnection of the five independent power systems in the federation in the first quarter of 2006 (MEED 10:10:03).

The turnkey contracts awarded were as follows:

Lot I-1, a new 400/220-kV substation at Dhaid in Sharjah emirate, went to France's Areva T&D, formerly known as Alstom T&D, for AED 296.8 million ($80.8 million);

Lot I-2, extension of the existing 400-kV substation at Taweelah in Abu Dhabi emirate, was awarded to Japan's Sumitomo Corporationfor about AED 41.9 million ($11.4 million);

Lot I-3, extension of the existing 400-kV H substation in Dubai emirate, went to Japan's Toshiba-Mitsubishi T&Dfor AED 84.5 million ($23 million);

Lot I-4, extension of the 220-kV substation at Sajaa in Sharjah emirate, was awarded to Austria's VA Techfor AED 18.4 million ($5 million);

Lot II-1, the supply and installation of 200 kilometres of 400-kV transmission line between Taweelah H station and Dhaid, was won by a consortium led by South Korea's Hyundai Engineering & Constructionand including the local Emirates Trading Agency (ETA)at a cost of AED 306.9 million ($83.6 million);

Lot II-2, the supply and installation of 36 kilometres of 220-kV transmission line between Sajaa and Dhaid, was awarded to the local Emirates Electrical Engineeringfor AED 31.7 million ($8.6 million);

Lot III, construction of the ENG monitoring centre, to be built at H station, and telecommunication facilities, went to Europe's ABBfor AED 32.9 million ($9 million).

The project will interconnect the five power networks operated by Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority (ADWEA), Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA), Sharjah Electricity & Water Authority (SEWA), Federal Electricity & Water Authority (FEWA) and Union Water & Electricity Company (UWEC). It is also an important link in the long-planned interconnection of the GCC power grid.

Electricite de France (EdF)is the main consultant on the project. It is being assisted on the transmission lines element by Germany's Fichtner.
