Six key bankers working in Bahrain's Islamic banking sector: Mohamed Hussain, Atif Abdulmalik, Yousif Abdulla Taqi, Esam Janahi, Faisal Mansoor al-Alwan and Mohammed Ebrahim Mohammed.

Mohamed Hussain

Position: Co-chief executive officer (CEO), Ithmaar Bank

Biography: Mohamed Hussain has been co-chief executive officer with Michael Lee since April 2008, and a member of the bank's board of directors since June 2008. Hussain is responsible for overseeing the bank's holdings in subsidiaries, for strategic investments and the group's treasury, private banking and risk management divisions. Before joining Ithmaar Bank last year, Hussain was CEO and a member of the board of Shamil Bank, which is wholly owned by Ithmaar. Hussain joined the local Shamil Bank in 1998. He was also general manager of Islamic Investment Company of the Gulf, in Bahrain, prior to its merger with Faysal Islamic Bank of Bahrain in 2000. His previous positions have included director of marketing and corporate finance at Bahrain International Bank and assistant vice-president of Gulf International Bank.

Atif Abdulmalik

Position: CEO, Arcapita

Biography: Atif Abdulmalik is one of the founders of Arcapita Bank, a Bahrain-based investment bank with assets of $3.8bn. Abdulmalik established Arcapita in 1997 and the company now has more than 270 employees in Bahrain, Atlanta, London and Singapore. Abdulmalik has a bachelor's degree in accounting, finance and management from Saint Edward's University in Texas and qualified as a public accountant in the State of Maryland, both in the US. In 2007, he was awarded the Proficiency Medal First Class by Bahrain's King Hamad bin Isa al-Khalifa, in acknowledgement of his contribution to the kingdom's banking sector. Abdulmalik has led Arcapita through a 10-year period of rapid and consistent growth. Under Abdulmalik's leadership, Arcapita has completed investment transactions worth more than $22bn and in 2008 reported net profits of $362m.

Yousif Abdulla Taqi

Position: CEO, Al-Salam Bank Bahrain

Biography: Yousif Abdulla Taqi has been CEO of Al-Salam since April 2006 when the bank was established. A certified public accountant, Taqi has been working in the banking and financial services industry since 1983. Prior to joining Al-Salam Bank Bahrain, he was deputy general manager of Kuwait Finance House (KFH) in Bahrain and was responsible for establishing Kuwait Finance House Malaysia. During his tenure with KFH, he was chairman of the Durrat Al-Bahrain development project. Taqi spent 20 years with UK consultants Ernst & Young, where he served as a partner in the Islamic financial services group advising Gulf and international financial institutions. He is currently the chairman of the local Manara Developments Company, Amar Holding Company and China's ASB Biodiesel (Hong Kong), as well as being a board member of Al-Salam Bank Algeria and Aluminium Bahrain.

Esam Janahi

Position: Chairman, Gulf Finance House.

Biography: Esam Janahi is one of the founding members of Gulf Finance House, established in 1999, and led the Bahraini financial institution as CEO until August 2007 when he was elected chairman. Janahi previously worked at Bahrain's First Islamic Investment Bank, now Arcapita, the UAE's Islamic Investment Company of the Gulf, Bahrain's TAIB Bank and TAIB Securities, and the US Merrill Lynch International. He is chairman of several Bahraini companies including Bahrain Aluminium Extrusion Company (Balexco), First Energy Bank, Injazat Technology Fund, Bahrain Financial Harbour and Bayan Holding Company. In addition to these roles, Janahi serves as a director of several other companies including Lebanon's Arab Finance House. Janahi holds a BSc in industrial management from the University of Petroleum and Minerals in Saudi Arabia and an MBA from Hull University in the UK.

Faisal Mansoor al-Alwan

Position: CEO, Shamil Bank.

Biography: Faisal Mansoor al-Alwan was appointed CEO of Shamil Bank in May 2008. Al-Alwan has nearly 30 years' experience in the banking industry. Before joining Shamil Bank, he was general manager of Bahrain's Arab Investment Company, where he worked for 18 years. Al-Alwan served as general manager at Societe de Banque Privee for six years before that. Al-Alwan has held senior management positions at Saudi National Commercial Bank, Citibank and Bahrain Middle East Bank, where he led the credit and marketing division for the Middle East region. Before that, al-Alwan was a senior marketing officer at Saudi National Commercial Bank, managing direct and syndicated facilities for the Gulf region and North Africa. Prior to that, he was operations and marketing manager at Citibank Bahrain. Al-Alwan is a board member of Delta International Bank in Egypt and the Housing Bank in Bahrain.

Mohammed Ebrahim Mohammed

Position: CEO, Bahrain Islamic Bank

Biography: Mohammed Ebrahim Mohammed was appointed CEO of Bahrain Islamic Bank in March 2008. He joined in April 2007 and has 30 years' experience in the banking industry. Mohammed has held senior positions in various local and international banks and financial companies in Bahrain and abroad including Bahraini credit card company CrediMax, Bank of Bahrain and Kuwait, Saudi National Commercial Bank and the US Chase Manhattan Bank. Mohammed has several academic qualifications including a diploma in executive management from the University of Bahrain, awarded in 1993, a Master's degree in business administration from the University of Glamorgan in Wales, awarded in 1998, and an associate degree from the Gulf Executive Management Programme from Virginia University in the US, awarded in 2000.
