The kingdom aims to become an aviation hub
- Manama looks to develop aviation hub for the region
- Economy has suffered following 2011 unrest and recent fall in oil prices
Bahrain wants to position itself as an aviation hub that connects major economies in the region, says Bahrains Transport & Telecommunications Minister Kamal bin Ahmed Mohammed.
Speaking at the Routes Middle East & Africa summit in Manama on 1 June, he said the kingdom was committed to its aviation industry. The large-scale redevelopment of the main airport is evidence of the countrys commitment to diversifying the economy through tourism and aviation, said Mohammed.
Bahrain has suffered economic and political instability following the social unrest, which erupted in 2011.
With the recent fall in oil prices, Bahrains economy has found itself increasingly dependent on support from GCC funds.
Saudi Arabia and the UAE have been its biggest supporters, with the airport expansion being funded by Abu Dhabi.
