A tender is due out in November for package 2 on the Bar al-Jissah resort, located on the coast southeast of Muscat. The package is for the construction of the first of three hotels planned for the resort. The client is the local Zubair Enterprise. Total project costs are estimated at $200 million (MEED 22:2:02).
The scope of works covers the construction of a 200-room, five-star hotel with leisure spa and apartments.
External facilities will include a souq and retail area; swimming pools covering an area of 2,600 square metres; an amphitheatre; external dining facilities; a social club and tennis courts; centralised chillers and laundry units; car parking for 300 vehicles; and extensive landscaped gardens.
The UK/local Tarmac Alawiis carrying out the enabling package on the 500,000-square-metre site. This includes constructing a road over the mountains from the nearby diving school, to allow contractors land access to bring in heavy plant and building materials. Two more hotels are planned for the resort, which will be operated by Hong Kong-based Shangri La Hotels & Resorts. Turner Internationalof the US is the project manager (MEED 23:8:02).
