Barwa al-Baraha is a massive complex in Doha’s industrial area being built to accommodate 53,000 of the migrant labourers involved in building Qatar’s mega-projects. The project is due for completion and commissioning in February 2015.
The complex will cover 1.9 million square metres and contain cricket pitches, tennis and basket ball courts, a supermarket, five mosques, cinema screens and a gym. It will also have a three-star hotel with capacity for 100 guests, which can be used by visiting families of the labourers. There will be parking for upto 4,200 vehicles.
Work on phase 1, the city’s infrastructure, was briefly put on hold in 2011, but it was finished in September 2012. Contracts for phase 2 were awarded in December, and work is due to start in the first quarter of 2013.
