Biography Benhadji Farid was appointed CEO of Algeria’s Ferphos Group in January 2009, replacing Lakhdar Mebarki. Prior to this, Farid held a senior position at Ferphos’ subsidiary group in Tebessa in the northeast of Algeria. He was also CEO of Algran, a subsidiary of Entreprise Nationale des Produits Miniers Non Ferreux & des Substances Utiles, which operates aggregates quarries in the north of the country. Ferphos Group has controlled all phosphate-related mining activities in Algeria for more than 100 years and is based in Annaba on the northeast coast. Most of its production capabilities are located at Complexe du Djebel-Onk in Tebessa province. The firm also operates several iron ore mines. Although Algeria is a relatively small miner of phosphate rock compared with Morocco, Jordan and Tunisia, it has the fourth largest proven reserves of the mineral worldwide.
