Bidding groups take shape for Sohar IWPP

20 February 2004
A clearer picture has emerged of the prospective bidding groups for the Sohar independent water and power project (IWPP). Five groups have been formed to bid for the project, which calls for the construction of a 480-550-MW, 30 million-gallon-a-day plant on a build-operate basis. Proposals are due to be submitted to the National Economy Ministry on 22 March (MEED 7:11:03).

The ministry is aiming to shortlist bidders in late May and award the contract in early July. The government will sign a 15-year power and water purchase agreement with the successful bidder. The first power from Sohar is envisaged by 1 April 2006, with the plant's full commissioning a year later.

The ministry is being advised on the Sohar IWPP by a team of Societe Generalewith Denton Wilde & Sapte, BankMuscatand Germany's Fichtner.
