Bids in for Al-Khafji housing

13 September 2002

Bids were submitted on 9 September for the project management contract on an estimated SR 200 million ($53 million) residential complex at Al-Khafji. The bidders include Hill Internationalof the US, Beirut-based Dar al-Handasah (Shair & Partners), Mace Internationalof the UK and KEO International Consultants of Kuwait.

The complex is one of the first civil projects to come out of an investment programme drawn up by Aramco Gulf Operations Company (AGOC) and Kuwait Gulf Oil Company (KGOC). Under the five-year plan, the two companies will spend some $1,200 million on maintaining and increasing production from offshore fields in the Neutral Zone and building associated support facilities at Al-Khafji.

The Neutral Zone has seen low levels of investment in recent years, and the two companies are now preparing for a period of heavy maintenance work. AGOC has already awarded contracts to build a power plant and upgrade well jackets. Besides the residential complex, which will house AGOC and KGOC staff, other support facilities to be built in the next few years include power and road infrastructure and an airport (MEED 14:6:02).
