The Jordan Industrial Estates Corporationhas invited bids from international consortia for the contract to develop an industrial estate in Aqaba. Bids are due on 15 January, and the contract is expected to be awarded by April. The successful bidder will be responsible for the development, marketing and commercial operation of the industrial estate on a 20-30-year concession. Located within a planned 380-square-kilometre special economic zone (SEZ), the estate will provide companies with preferential access to the US (see Tenders).
New Jersey-based ABB SUSAis developing basic infrastructure for the 57-hectare estate, the development of which is part-funded by the US Agency for International Development (USAID). The $100 million estate is one of the largest developments in the SEZ, which was inaugurated in May. A UK team of Mersey Docks & Harbours Companyand TCI Internationalwas the only group to submit a bid by the 25 October deadline for the contract to set up a master developer for the zone (MEED 9:11:01).
