Bombs in Riyadh - again

23 April 2004
In the first major attack in the kingdom in the past six months, four people were killed and 148 injured when a car bomb exploded near a security forces' complex in Riyadh's central Nasiriyah district. The Al-Haramain Brigades, a group linked to the Al-Qaeda network, has claimed responsibility for the suicide attack, which caused severe damage to the six-storey building and to cars and buildings in the vicinity. While the group's claim has not been verified independently, Saudi officials have blamed Al-Qaeda. 'Who else sends suicide bombers to blow up cars in the midst of urban centres?' an official said in the aftermath of the attack.

The blasts came only days after US warnings of imminent attacks in the kingdom, calling on non-essential diplomatic staff and family members to leave the country. In the past week leading up to the explosion, Saudi security forces discovered five cars packed with explosives in the capital. Recent weeks have also seen repeated gun battles between militants and security forces in and outside Riyadh. In the most recent clash in the capital, five police officers were killed.

The Al-Haramain Brigades, whose name refers to Islam's two holiest sites in the cities of Mecca and Medina, have also claimed responsibility for an attack against a security official in Riyadh last December, in which a car bomb exploded but no casualties were reported.
