Bubiyan begins third stage

16 November 2006
The Mega Projects Agency has invited interested companies to submit prequalification applications by 16 December for the third stage of the Bubiyan seaport project, covering the port infrastructure. Evaluation of applications is expected to take up to six months, with a tender likely to be issued in the second half of 2007.

The design and build contract covers the construction of a container terminal, four berths, and 1,300-metre-long quay wall in addition to port buildings and utilities, digging and soil improvement works and site levelling. The port's total handling capacity will be 2.5 million 20-foot equivalent units (TEUs) a year when it opens in 2010.

The contract is the third on the estimated $1,500 million port scheme. A Chinese/local group is low bidder for the first phase, covering the access bridge and road, while prequalification has been completed for the estimated $500 million second phase dredging package (MEED 25:8:06).
