Cairo reshuffles cabinet

09 January 2013

Ten ministers in Egyptian government are replaced

The Egyptian government of President Mohamed Mursi has replaced 10 of 36 federal ministers in a partial cabinet reshuffle.

The newly appointed cabinet members are not seen as high-profile figures and have mainly been selected from lower-ranking ministries. Key new appointments made by Mursi include a new minister of finance and a new interior minister, who will oversee Egypt’s police force.

El-Morsi Hegazy, an economics professor at the University of Alexandria, has been selected as the new finance minister, while General Mohamed Ibrahim will head up the Interior Ministry.

Hatem Abdel-Latif, an engineering professor at Ain Shams University, was appointed minister of transportation after the resignation of Rashad el-Metiny following last year’s bus crash on a rail line in Assiuit that killed 50. Abdel Latif is also one of three new ministers to be members of the Muslim Brotherhood.

The other two Brotherhood members are Bassem Ouda, minister of supply and domestic trade and Mohamed Ali Beshr, the minister of local development.

The other new appointments are:

  • Minister of state for legal and parliamentary affairs: Omar Salem
  • Minister of electricity and energy: Ahmed Emam
  • Minister of civil aviation: Wael el-Maadawy
  • Minister of state for environmental affairs: Khaled Abdel-Aal
