The local/UK Carillion Alawi has been awarded an estimated $250 million main construction contract for a concert hall in Muscat.

Located in Al-Sarooj, the 1,000-seat House of Musical Arts will host a range of entertainment, including music, theatre and opera.

It will cover 80,000 square metres and will be the centrepiece of a cultural development comprising landscaped gardens and a cultural souk housing art galleries, restaurants, coffee houses and shops.

A tunnel from the Sultan Qaboos highway - linking the Intercontinental hotel with the Foreign Affairs Ministry - will offer access to the development.

Swiss Boring, part of Italy's Trevi Group, has completed the piling works for the concert hall. UK-based Theatre Projects Consultants (TPC) prepared the concept designs. US-based WATG is the architectural consultant. Denmark's Cowi is the structural engineer.

The Royal Court Affairs Ministry is the client.
