Chinese firm's act of Union

17 December 2004
China National Building Materials Equipment Corporation (CBMEC),a subsidiary of Sinoma, has received a letter of intent from the local Union Cement Company(UCC)to build a new clinker plant in Ras al-Khaimah's Khor Khwair industrial area. The estimated AED 500 million ($136 million) turnkey contract will take 21 months.

The project's scope covers the construction of a complete clinker plant with clinker grinding and packaging facilities and guaranteed production capacity of 10,000 tonnes a day (t/d). The clinker line will include a raw mill, a silo and a kiln line.

CBMEC won the contract following the submission of revised bids in early August. Mobilisation and site preparation is due to begin before the end of the year. UCC, which produces 1.2 million t/y of clinker, had earlier this year approached several international companies to carry out the project on a turnkey basis. The consultant is the technical centre of Germany's Heidelberg Cement.

The project is the second major cement plant contract to go to Sinoma in the region. In October, it was awarded the estimated $240 million turnkey contract to build a new clinker plant in Saudi Arabia for Southern Province Cement Company (SPCC - MEED 3:9:04).
