Chinese sign Libyan rail contracts worth $2.6bn

Chinese Civil Engineering Construction Corporation has signed two contracts, worth a total of LD3.2bn ($2.6bn), for the construction of two railway lines in Libya.

The Chinese firm will build a 352-kilometre-long line in the north of the country. The line will follow the coast, running from Sirte to Misurata and Khoms.

The LD2.2bn project will be made up of 26 stations, 55 rail bridges and 370 footbridges across the tracks. It is expected to take four years to complete.

A second line linking Hicha to towns in the south will take three years to complete and will include five train depots, 40 rail bridges and 940 footbridges. The project will cost LD1bn.

The client for both contracts is the Railway Executive Board.
