Chinese win Doha tower contract

Beijing-based Bureau 2 of the China State Construction Engineering Companyhas been awarded an estimated QR 420 million ($115 million) contract to build the Sheikh Saud office tower in the West Bay area of Doha. Up to six local and international contractors were competing for the landmark building, which will be the tallest in Doha. The project is the first high-profile building contract to have been awarded to a Chinese company in the local market.

The project calls for the construction of a 230-metre tower with 44 storeys, three basements and a capped dome. A feature of the 45-metre-diameter building, which will be cylindrical in shape, will be a 112-metre-high atrium.

Other bidders for the contract included: a joint venture of Belgium's Six Constructand the local Midmac Contracting; Austria's Strabag; and Athens-based Consolidated Contractors International Company (CCC), with Cyprus-based Joannou & Paraskevaides (J&P - Overseas).

The architect is Paris-based Ateliers Jean Nouvel; the engineering consultant is Beirut-based Dar al-Handasah (Shair & Partners). The client is a private investor (MEED 6:8:04).
