Jewish settlers blamed for abduction of Palestinian teenager in East Jerusalem

The West Bank could be on the verge of a new wave of violent clashes after the abduction and suspected revenge killing of a Palestinian teenager in East Jerusalem.

Tensions have been high since three kidnapped Israeli teenagers were found dead near Hebron in the West Bank, with the Israeli government blaming the murders on Hamas.

Palestinian leaders claim the death of 17-year-old Mohammed Abu Khdair in Jerusalem was a revenge killing by extremist Jewish settlers.

The news led to violent clashes between Palestinian protesters and Israeli security forces in East Jerusalem on 2 July. At least 35 people were injured by rubber bullets, according to reports.

Meanwhile, Israel carried out a series of airstrikes in the Gaza Strip in response to Palestinian militants in Gaza firing several rockets into Israeli territory.
