The Works Ministry is preparing to award a contract for the design and planning of an approach road for the proposed Qatar-Bahrain causeway. Five consultants are competing for the contract. They include MVA Consultantsand Hyder Consulting, both of the UK, Parsons Global Servicesand Parsons Brinckerhoff International, both of the US.
A consortium led by Denmark's COWIhas completed preliminary studies for the so-called 'Friendship Bridge'. A landing point for the causeway has been identified on a site south of Manama (MEED 23:8:02).
The ministry is planning several major road projects over the coming 12 months as part of plans aimed at relieving traffic congestion in and around Manama. They include: a 30-kilometre highway link to the southern resort of Durrat al-Bahrain; the widening of the Sitra Causeway and associated access road schemes; the construction of a major flyover interchange at Wali al-Ahed, located to the north of Madinat Hamad; and the construction of an access road to Amwaj island (Bahrain, MEED Special Report, 13:9:02, pages 37-38).
