Contract awarded for China Town project in Dubai

The local Bin Hafeez General Contracting & Transport Establishmenthas been awarded an estimated AED 173 million ($47 million) contract for the infrastructure package on the proposed China Town project in Dubai. Bin Hafeez beat off competition from five other local and international contractors (MEED 6:6:03).

The 12-month package calls for the construction of roads, car parking, stormwater drainage and sanitary disposal facilities and electrical works.

The mixed-use project involves the construction of residential apartments, hotels, a shopping mall, entertainment facilities, factory outlets, warehousing and related works. It is being tendered in four packages. The three other packages are: Chinamex apartments 1 and 2 and Chinamart.

A contract award is imminent for the estimated AED 300 million ($82 million) Chinamart package, for which seven companies submitted bids. The local Al-Shafar General Transport & Contracting is understood to be the frontrunner for the award.

The contract covers the construction of a shopping mall to be built in the shape of a dragon over 150,000 square metres and a 30,000-square-feet warehousing facility. The 12-month contract includes architectural, structural and mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) works.

Bids are also under evaluation for the two apartments packages, worth a total of AED 380 million ($103 million). The contracts include a total of 25 apartment buildings and related facilities.

The consultant for the infrastructure and apartments packages is Lebanon's Associated Consultants Engineers (ACE) International. The local Shahid Engineering Consultantsis the consultant for the Chinamart package. The client is Dubai-based Nakheel (MEED 8:5:03).
