Contractor picked for Dubai snow centre

The local/UK Al-Naboodah Laing O' Rourkehas been selected for the contract to build the snow centre and the west car park package on the Mall of the Emirates retail development in Dubai (MEED 7:11:03).

Estimated to be worth AED 220 million ($60 million), the contract calls for the construction of: a 1,500-capacity ski resort about 80 metres wide and 400 metres long; five ski runs; chiller units with capacity of 6,000 tonnes of snow; and related facilities. The contract will take about 16 months to complete.

Mall of the Emirates will be located at Al-Barsha on the Sheikh Zayed highway. The retail development, to be built at a total cost of about $815 million, will have a gross built-up area of 6.5 million square feet and a gross leasable area of 2.4 million square feet.

The local Khansaheb Civil Engineering is carrying out the first package under an estimated AED 550 million ($150 million) contract awarded in early October. It calls for the construction of a two-storey shopping mall (MEED 10:10:03).

The project manager is the UK's Mace International; the structural engineering consultant is Mott MacDonald, also of the UK. The client is the local Majid al-Futtaim Group of Companies.
