Facility will provide 1,600MW for residential and industrial schemes
The contracting consortium of Germanys Siemens and South Koreas Daewoo Engineering & Construction has completed the construction of the Shuweihat S3 power plant in Abu Dhabi and has handed the facility over to the developer.
The owner of the 1,600MW power plant is the Shuweihat Asia Power Company (Sapco), a consortium consisting of Japans Sumitomo Corporation, the Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco) and the local utility Abu Dhabi Water & Electricity Authority (Adwea).
The plant will be operated by the Shuweihat Asia O&M Company.
The plant will provide power to help meet the emirates growing domestic and industrial electricity demand, including power required for the nearby Ruwais refinery.
Adwea selected the Sumitomo/Kepco consortium to build the plant in October 2010. The project agreements for the plant were signed in February 2011, with debt funding split roughly between a $370m Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) loan; $370m from Export-Import Bank of Korea through a direct loan and loan insurance; and a $360m commercial bank tranche.
