Mixed-use waterfront scheme in Abu Dhabi includes residential, retail and commercial space

Selected contractors have been invited to prequalify for construction work on the AED2bn ($545m) Makers District development on Abu Dhabi’s Reem Island.

The waterfront scheme comprises a mix of residential, hospitality, commercial and retail space spread across an area of 180,000 square metres of land. Once complete, it will have more than 1,000 residential units, 11,000 square metres of commercial and retail space. The scheme is scheduled for completion in 2020.

The scheme is being developed by Imkan, which is a subsidiary of Abu Dhabi Capital Group (ADCG).

In September last year, Denmark’s Ramboll was appointed as the lead consultant for the first phase of the Makers District.

Ramboll will provide lead consultancy services on the first phase of Makers District, working alongside architects Denmark’s BIG and MVRDV of the Netherlands.

Other projects are moving forward on Reem Island. Last year a local/Italian joint venture of Itinera Ghantoot was appointed as the main contractor for the $1.2bn Reem Mall scheme.

The Reem Mall site is located in the Najmat District on Reem Island. The scheme involves building more than 200,000 square metres of retail, leisure, and entertainment facilities, including 450 stores, and 85 food and beverage outlets.
