Contractors prepare to bid for Qatar port project

22 September 2016

Port terminal expansions are also planned

Firms are preparing to bid by 9 October for a contract to design and build a food storage facility at Hamad Port.

Qatar’s New Port Project (NPP) Tender Committee specified that the project entails building specialist storage facilities for rice, sugar and edible oils and will include associated infrastructure and equipment.

International firms, local firms with Grade A certifications from NPP for roads and buildings, and joint ventures formed between both types of companies are eligible to apply and bid for the contract.

Additional phases for the terminal expansion of Hamad Port are being planned.

The addition of a second and third container terminal at Hamad Port, which was formerly called the New Port Project (NPP), will increase annual handling capacity to 6 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) by 2020, up from the 2 million TEUs capacity the facility will have when it opens at the end of 2016.

The award of contracts specifically for the infrastructure and buildings at the Qatar Emiri Naval Forces Base (QENFB) at the port has been delayed.

The first of these projects comprises the construction of 53 buildings and associated facilities; the second package comprises 98 buildings, and the last comprises 12 buildings, including sports and medical facilities for the state’s naval force. Their original target award dates fall on the second quarter of the year.
