19 June 2013

Work will involve building a sea water bypass pump house at the Baraka nuclear project

The South Korean joint venture of Hyundai E&C/Samsung C&T has invited firms to bid for the contract to build a pump house at the Baraka nuclear project in Abu Dhabi.

Companies have until 11 July to submit bids for the construction tender. The work will involve building a sea water bypass pump house (SWBPH). The SWBPH structure works will comprise two sections. The first will provide the facilities for units 1-4 of the nuclear facility, while the provisional second section will contain the SWBPH structure for units 5-8.

Contractors will submit prices for the first section and provisional prices for the second section. For the first section, construction work is scheduled to begin in August this year, and reach completion in September 2014. A decision on whether the second section will go ahead will be made by November this year, in which case construction would begin by the end of 2013.

The work will involve all the reinforced concrete works, the supply and installation of metalworks and all insert works.

In 2009, The Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation (Enec) awarded the South Korean consortium led by Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco) the $20bn contract to build the four nuclear reactors at the Baraka site, located in Abu Dhabi’s Western Region. Construction work on the first reactor, Baraka 1, began in July 2012. The first reactor is scheduled to come online in 2017, with the remaining three planned for completion in 2020.
