Firms to carry out mechanical and electrical work

The consortium building the midfield terminal at Abu Dhabi International airport has appointed contractors for the project’s mechanical and electrical work.

Turkey’s Anel Electrical Company has been awarded the electrical contract, while the local Efeco has won the mechanical work. Efeco is part of Arabtec Holding, which is also the parent of local contractor Arabtec Construction.

Arabtec Construction is one of three joint venture partners building the terminal building. The other two are Turkey’s TAV and Athens-based Consolidated Contractors Company. The team formally signed the estimated AED10.55bn ($2.8bn) contract in late June. It was given notice to proceed with the construction work for the midfield terminal at Abu Dhabi International airport on 26 August. The notice from Abu Dhabi Airports Company followed the appointment of the US-based team of Hill International and Aecom to manage the construction of the terminal.

The midfield terminal will be built between the two existing runways at Abu Dhabi International airport. The total built-up area will be 630,000 square metres and it will include a multi-storey car park. It will also comprise 65 contact gates that will be capable of accommodating A380 aircraft, as well as house 27,000 square metres of retail and food and beverage outlets.

The project client, Abu Dhabi Airports Company (Adac), is also understood to be in the final stages of negotiations with contractors for the estimated AED1bn contract to build the airside areas for the midfield terminal at the airport. Contractors submitted fresh bids for the contract in September.
