The contracts cover the construction of a main grandstand, with initial capacity of 5,000 spectators, and a marketing and management suite. The facilities will take about 12 months to complete.
To be called the Dubai Autodrome & Business Park, phase 1 of the project is estimated to cost a total of AED 200 million ($54 million). It involves the construction of a 5.4-kilometre grand prix circuit, a 1.2-kilometre indoor and outdoor go-karting track, an off-road driving course and related works. The circuit is expected to be approved by the world motor sports governing bodies.
The project will also entail the construction of a business park to include a racing school, retail outlets, restaurants and business units. The scheme will be located next to the Emirates Highway, with a view from the grandstand to the Burj al-Arab hotel on the coast.
A US/local team of HOK Sportand Venue & Eventis the masterplanner and architect; Buro Happoldand WS Atkins, both of the UK, are the structural designer and the civil and mechanical, electrical and plumbing (MEP) designer respectively. The UK's West Surrey Racingis the specialist track designer; the local Al-Khatib Cracknellis the landscape architect. Edara, also local, is the project manager; the client is Dubai-based Union Properties(MEED 19:4:02).
