Costain homes in on Kurdistan government awards

07 June 2004
The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has awarded three contracts totalling about $28 million to the UK's Costain Group. The group is also expecting to sign in the coming weeks several other deals, giving it a significant foothold in the area.

The contracts are: to design, build and equip a medical laboratory in Irbil; to assist in the formation of a central planning authority tasked with the development of a 35-year infrastructure masterplan for the area; and to provide staff to the Construction Ministry for the design and construction of the new Irbil International Airport.

The company is also due to be involved in the development of the citadel complex in the centre of Irbil. The project involves the reconstruction of ancient walls and refurbishment of infrastructure at the site, which covers an area of 110,000 square metres and has been occupied for more than 7,000 years.

Costain is expected to be responsible for the subsequent redevelopment, and for reviewing and upgrading the Construction Ministry's existing central testing laboratories.
