Curfew imposed in Darfur region

18 December 2003
Officials in the western region of Darfur have imposed curfews in two western provinces after peace talks aimed at ending violence in the region collapsed, the local daily Al-Sahafa reported on 18 December. The report said that the governor of northern Darfur district, Osman Kebir, had imposed a curfew throughout his state, which borders Chad. However, Kebir told Reuters that the order had been in place since April because of 'ongoing security problems'. Al-Sahafa also said the governor of Southern Darfur state, Adam Hamid Musa, had on 16 December imposed a night-time curfew in Nyala, the state's capital.

A group a MPs representing the residents of the western Darfur region on 15 December called on the international community to lend greater support in ending the cycle of violence in the region. The MPs said that Arab militias in the region were killing between 50 and 100 local residents every week, despite ongoing peace talks in neighbouring Chad (MEED 16:12:03).
