05 February 2013

Bids originally submitted in 2011

The contract for the rolling stock package for the Lusail light-rail transit project in Doha is expected to be awarded in March this year, according to Saad al-Muhannadi, chief executive officer of Qatar Railways Company.

The bids were originally submitted in May 2011, but speaking at a conference in Dubai, Al Muhannadi, said that bids were still under commercial evaluation.

The contract includes the supply of 34 trains to serve the light-rail as well as a systems package.

Al-Muhannadi confirmed that 100 per cent of the tunnelling work on the Lusail  project has been completed and the stations are now under construction.

The Lusail rail network will include 39 kilometres of track, four lines and 38 stations.

A consortium comprising the US’ Aecom and Parsons won the project management consultancy contract on the project in April in 2011. Lusail City will be the main centre of activity during the Fifa World Cup in 2022.
