Pakistani firm wins fourth contract this year in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi Gas Industries Company (Gasco) has awarded Pakistan’s Descon Engineering an estimated $41.5m deal to build an acid-gas flaring system at the Habshan gas field in the southwest of the emirate by the middle of 2014.

According to a source close to the project, Descon beat rival bids from eight other firms in a 17 August bid round, including Dodsal and Punj Lloyd of India, Technip of France and Italy’s Techint.

Australia’s WorleyParsons carried out the front-end engineering and design (feed) for the scheme, which is just one part of a series of schemes undertaken by Gasco at its Habshan gas processing and distribution hub to preparing for a slew of new gas to pass through the complex (MEED 20:5:10).

This is the fourth engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) project won by Descon firm this year. The company was awarded smaller deals covering an ammonia flaring system for Fertil worth $6m and a $5m deal to build gasoil transfer facilities and slop injection pumps between the Musaffah Terminal and Abu Dhabi Refinery for Abu Dhabi Oil Refining Company (Takreer).

Descon will also build pilot gas lifts units at two wells in the Bab Thamama B field For Abu Dhabi Company for Onshore Operations (Adco).

The projects will be executed from Descon’s newly established design office in the Musaffah industrial area of Abu Dhabi, which was opened in early October. Gasco is planning a second office for the acid gas flaring project.
