Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (Dewa) has increased its total electricity generation installed capacity by 700MW to reach 14,117MW.

The third 600MW unit at the Hassyan independent power project (IPP), whose fuel was converted from clean coal to natural gas, as well as an additional 100MW from the fifth phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid (MBR) Solar Park, accounted for the additional capacity.

This brings the completed capacity at the MBR Solar Park’s fifth phase to 400MW, with the first 300MW completed in August.

An estimated 1,672MW of capacity is now operational at the solar park, which brings the share of renewable energy capacity in the state utility’s assets portfolio to roughly 11.8 per cent.

A further 1,233MW of solar photovoltaic (PV) and concentrated solar power (CSP) are under construction at the solar park.

The Hassyan IPP will have a total capacity of 2,400MW when completed. The plant's first 1,200MW reached production capacity in February this year, while the final 600MW is set to be operational in the third quarter of next year.

Dewa plans to implement 2,200MW of renewable energy capacity, with target commercial operation dates falling between 2025 and 2030, the company said in its initial public offering (IPO) prospectus.

The projected capacity will be split into eight solar PV schemes and one CSP scheme.

The Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 aims for 100 per cent clean energy sources, inclusive of natural gas.
