DEWA picks consultants

Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA) has appointed consultants for two major generation projects designed to meet a surge in power and water demand in the emirate. The UK's Mott MacDonaldhas been awarded the consultancy contract for the 400-MW expansion of H station at Al-Aweer, while Germany's Lahmeyer Internationalhas been appointed consultant for phase 2 of the Jebel Alipower and desalination project (MEED 19:3:04).

The Al-Aweer project is to be implemented on a fast-track basis with an engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor due on board in October. Project completion is set for May 2006. First power from phase 2 of the Jebel Aliproject is expected in 2007. The plant will have capacity of about 1,200 MW and 80 million gallons a day.
