Driller signs up for South Pars

03 June 2003
Japanese Drilling Company (JDC)on 18 May signed a $182 million contract to carry out offshore drilling in the South Pars area for Pars Oil & Gas Company (POGC). The work will be carried out by Pars Drilling Kish Company, a new joint venture set up by JDC, Japan's Nissho Iwai Corporation (NIC)and the local Oriental Oil Kish Company (PDKC).

The long-term contract is for five years, extendable by a further five years. It involves the provision of supplementary drilling services to POGC for all South Pars phases as well as the oil layers project, and has been awarded due to a shortage of drilling rigs in the Gulf. POGC also has its own drilling programmes to carry out alongside those being undertaken within specific field development programmes.

The contract calls for two jack-up rigs to be operated by PDKC, with the provision that at least two more should be supplied if necessary. The first two rigs, which belong to JDC, have been used already for drilling at Sirri and on South Pars phases 4-5 and 6-8. NIC and Oriental are carrying out the financing and local construction content of the project respectively.
