Dubai airport project gathers pace

31 May 2002

Dubai's Department of Civil Aviation has invited companies to prequalify by 31 August for a major new package on the estimated $2,500 million Dubai International Airport expansion (MEED 8:6:01).

Called PQ 19, it covers the mechanical, electrical and plumbing works for the proposed concourse 2 and terminal 3.

In mid May, companies were invited to apply by 31 July to prequalify for two other packages. The first - PQ 17 - is for the design, supply, installation and maintenance of airfield guidance, external vehicular, external pedestrian, internal directional, and emergency and information signage.

The second package - PQ 18 - will include the design, supply, installation and maintenance of two automated people-mover systems, of 1.5 kilometres each, which will be located on the proposed underground tunnel connecting concourses 2 and 3 and terminal 3.

A contract award is pending on the first major construction package on the project. Package AX 056 is expected to be worth up to $100 million and will involve extensive earthworks, dewatering and piling for terminal 3, the second concourse and the car park (MEED 11:1:02).

Lebanon's Dar Al-Handasah (Shair & Partners) and France's Aeroports de Paris are consultants for the airport expansion project.
