Dubai and Abu Dhabi are region's most sustainable cities

Environmental performance holds back strong economic scoring

Dubai and Abu Dhabi are the two most sustainable cities in the Middle East, according to the Netherlands-based Arcadis’ 2016 Sustainable Cities report.

Dubai ranked first out of the eight Middle Eastern cities covered in the report and 52nd overall. Arcadis surveyed 100 global cities using metrics for social (people), environmental (planet) and economic (profit) sustainability.

For the profit indicator, Dubai was ranked fourth globally, ahead of other major business hubs such as New York, Paris and Tokyo. It also performed well from a social perspective, but fared less well on the environmental side, finishing seventh in the region and 96th globally.

Abu Dhabi was the second-highest ranked Middle Eastern city, in 58th place globally. Like Dubai, it scored well on economic sustainability but faces similar challenges on its environmental performance.
